The truth about supplements

Organic doesn’t mean safe

We prefer the use of organic ingredients as much as possible in supplement formulas. However, organic ingredients can contain excessive levels of natural elements that can be potentially harmful to your body. Lead is a great example because we all know that consuming high levels of lead can lead to many serious health problems. Virtually every soil-based plant ingredient is going to have some measurable amount of lead but the range can be quite dramatic from one source to the next. As consumers, we don’t really know though how much lead may be present because it’s not required to be listed on a supplement label. You may see a Prop 65 warning and that’s great but, again, the warning doesn’t provide actual lead amounts, only that lead is present. At HUSK, we run robust tests for natural elements like heavy metals and we simply won’t use an ingredient that exceeds the most conservative safe level recommendations.

Transparency doesn’t mean clean.

A big marketing trend by manufacturers has been to show where an ingredient comes from so that the consumer feels like it’s somehow more clean or safe. The truth is that many of these “traceable sources” are synthetic ingredients that have been made with binders and excipients, some good and some bad. As a consumer, there is no way to know. So, transparency is nice but without disclosing to the consumer ALL of the ingredients as listed in a test report, it becomes just another marketing term.

We're raising the bar on quality in the supplement industry.

We created HUSK for one simple reason: To push the quality standards in the industry higher. Since the supplement boom of the 1970s, a lot of focus has been placed on creating value priced supplements. Consumers have traditionally purchased based on value/low price because it’s been so difficult to tell the difference between one product to the next (example: can you really tell the quality difference from one vitamin c to the other on a store shelf?). This has led to a commoditization of many ingredients (meaning, cheap, generic quality) and a focus on creating better efficiencies in the manufacturing process rather than better quality in the actual product. Manufacturers tend to buy the same ingredients from the same suppliers in order to better compete on price. At HUSK, we have a vision for how we could improve the sourcing and formulation of supplements to make them better and our first product, HUSK fiber, is a great example of what happens when you make quality and integrity your main focus.

Corporate Philosophy

It’s easy to create a company focused solely on making money but our business model emphasizes giving back and being advocates for building a better planet and being better people. This means shifting our focus from maximizing profits to maximizing impact.

Sustainability

This is a big part of our commitment to be a different kind of supplement brand. The industry uses a lot of plastics in packaging bottles and lids and we don’t like it. In 2024, we will be launching fully biodegradable packaging which will be the first of its kind in the industry. We are committed to being on the forefront of sustainable solutions throughout the supply chain.

Certified B Corporation

We are working toward becoming a Certified B Corporation to better align with our values and mission as a company. We intend to work as hard at giving back to our communities and setting new standards in sustainability as we do in making the highest quality products available.
